PINKIETESSA A true English icon and indispensable ornament to our collective nightlife for four decades now, Pinkie has never compromised her high sartorial and beauty standards. She had no problem outshining everyone the minute she jumped out of her Quality Street box (her North London pied-à-terre) into The Blitz. Modeling her stunning looks after the Hollywood stars of the '30s and '40s, she personified glamour and beauty way beyond the call of duty. I personally always thought she was more akin to another quintessential English rose, '40s/'50s film star Valerie Hobson, rather than Fox's or MGM's contract players. Connoisseurs will appreciate the compliment. To this day no one has ever seen her in a track suit - perish the thought! - even when shopping at Tesco's. Her motto is 'dressing up is like breathing'. 'I just won't go out looking a mess,' she continues. 'I don't even think about it, that's what I do and I get on with it. It's no more complicated to me than wearing a pair of jeans and a T-shirt.' Everything she wears is the product of her imagination and is run on her sewing machine. Beside being a gifted singer/performer, she's also a consummate stylist and costume-maker. She claims to be totally self-taught. 'I do not have any college training as I just hate college,' she confesses. Having said that, I don't expect her to let on about much else, certainly not anything to do with her past. Ask her and she'd only fob you off with one of her 'I don't do history' lines. She'll add 'I don't talk about the past; it doesn't fit in with my integrity. I never look back.' Anyone else would relish talking about the glittering olden days. Typically, she never worked her assets to the full or capitalized on her talents or looks the way she could have done. Presumably, it is because Pinkie values her privacy so much and something tells me that, against all odds, she's also quite publicity-shy. Nowadays, she's happy just going to the occasional launch party and spends the best of her time, she says, styling celebrities and pop stars, even though she refuses to name them. She hasn't lost any of her icy cool reserve, or her English rose beauty for that matter. |
