MANKO & JASON ATOMIC This always impeccably turned-out couple first met at Torture Garden. "I made the first move," proudly claims Manko. They'd both been in a previous failed marriage and their love-at-first-sight encounter seems to have done wonders to their life. Jason originally decided to move to London after seeing an ad in ID magazine. It said "Are you hip enough for the FF list?". Little did he know that it only publicised a Thursday club night at the Hippodrome called Frizzby Fox (Peter Stringfellows' then-partner)! Getting beaten and mugged on London streets for wearing mascara, then being strip-searched by the police was still better, he feels, than living in Oxfordshire. Kashpoint is the club in which they first made a real impact. "I just loved the way they stamped my wrist at the door with FFF (Free For Freaks)," reminisces the charismatic Manko. The pair have so far also patronised clubs like Pcokz, Nag Nag Nag and Anti-Social. Jason is rarely seen without a sketchbook in hand, as he likes nothing better than sketching the people who excite him. "I once had a dream," he confesses. "Salvador Dali was telling me that it's an artist's responsibility to make the world a more colourful place through his appearance, not just his work. Dressing down would be letting myself down and betraying my fellowmen by denying them beauty and creativity." Jason has already exhibited his series of paintings of iconic characters from the London club scene around the world, including the National Portrait Gallery. He's also added a new feather to his hat by going into street poster art and prints. As for Manko's current affairs, she gained a reputation for being England's top Suicide Girl on the popular alt porn pin-up site. She's also started her own label named Drool Gear, which is available from Dada Gods. She blames her breathtaking sartorial taste on the lack of exciting garments on the High Street or even the catwalk. "I had no choice but teach myself to sew from the tender age of 14. I usually randomly combine words that I like, for instance 'Tokyo, sex change, Barbie, Superhero, road kill ...', then try to visualise them as a look. It's a pretty dada approach, but it's great fun!" And it certainly does the job. |
