NEW LOOK: A MAJOR OVERHAUL IS UNDER WAY: TONS OF UPLOADS, BIGGER IMAGES & A BRAND NEW DESIGN COMING SOON!
Welcome to alexgerry.com, Alex Gerry's portfolio of music/nightlife photography and journalism. Much akin to what you'd expect from a good magazine, this is the place to keep abreast of the escapades and tribulations of past and present club freaks, party monsters, drag queens, DJs, celebrities, pop stars, rock legends and the like. Captured here are some of the most significant - as well as the downright uncool - shakers and groovers of the club, music and showbiz scenes from both sides of the Atlantic. You'll also find studio portraits and features about music, nightlife, travel and reportage, not forgetting the author's own published biographies and interviews, some of his anecdotic press clippings and news about his forthcoming books. Last but not least, extensive pages featuring exclusive facts about two global icons - Brigitte Bardot (published work 4) and Francoise Hardy (published work 5) - are dedicated to fans and collectors worldwide. This site was entirely constructed by Alex Gerry, focusing on simplicity and effectiveness, much in the style of a model agency's headsheet. Image size has been deliberately kept to a minimum. Holding the mouse over an image will not enlarge it but open a text tag featuring details, captions and a reference number. More accurate dates, will also be added to the images that don't yet have one, when the necessary research is completed. Enter the Technicolor twilight zone, feel the vibrancy and explore youth culture. Email your comments, suggestions, updates, constructive criticism and compliments ... they're always welcome! Send feedback, commission shoots/editorial, or order prints from the CONTACT page. This site is still under construction, but is updated regularly and it is best viewed on a Mac platform like Safari.
A photographic exhibition of Alex Gerry's iconic nightlife and music images is currently being shown at Village Soho, 81 Wardour Street, London W1D 6QD, across the 3 floors.
REVIEWS and COMMENTS
"Welcome to the hidden world of underground culture, where every corner is explored. What is fantastic is that this storyboard of three decades shows that what goes around, comes around. It all starts with the kids in some dingy venue and, in retrospect, ends up in the mainstream. Meanwhile, in the middle of the night, the kids have moved on and Alex is there, camera in hand." Piers Atkinson, editor of Disorder Magazine.
"Alex gerry may have attended so many dos over the decades they've all rolled into one big party, but he's always stayed sharp enough to document it on his website. Still partying hard with the best of 'em, he talks us through 20 years of party secrets and proves he's still going strong ..." Holly Shackleton, I-D Magazine.
"Alex Gerry effortlessly side-stepped great pretenders who patronised a club, dropped out, then resurfaced 15 years later claiming to be 'scene specialists'. And let's not even mention the many scene editors and reporters who can't be arsed to go out. Alex, however, seized decades of club and music scenes with both hands and made sharp, lyrical love to them in words and pictures." Sasha De Suinn, arts editor of QX International Magazine.
"Just checked out alexgerry.com. I must say it's very SHABBA!!! Amazing pictures! Love and shabbatasticness. If you see me ... be sure to say SHABBAAA!!!" Zezi, ex-editor of The Super Super Magazine, Coconut Twins DJ.
"Alex Gerry, how come we're not dead? Get your shot quick, before I fall over!" Matthew Glamorre, club freak/promoter of Kashpoint.
"It goes without saying that the excellence and consistency of Alex Gerry's work, be it written or photographic, stands no comparison." Laurence Malice, promoter of Trade nightclub/owner of Egg nightclub.
"Alex Gerry launches a website dedicated to the weird and wonderful world of way-out clubbing. Following a huge amount of work, Alex's dream of bringing his photography and journalism to the web has finally been achieved. Worth a look for the extraordinary collection of images cataloguing over 20 years of music and nightlife." Westminster Adult Education.
"Alex Gerry has the edge. He knows intinctively what's hot and what's not. Few people know the music and club scenes inside out as he does." Richard De Clare, publisher of After Dark and Night Out In London.
"Cool site and we're flattered to be in such good company!" Manko, designer/model/stylist & Jason Atomic, artist/writer.
"I love my page as it covers so many of my different looks! Thank you!!!!!!" Ryan Styles, performer/club personality.
"I had a good old varda at the site ... it's just terrific and the piccies are gorge!!!" Tasty Tim, DJ/disco leg-end.
"I just spent 40 minutes in there. The site is that addictive!" Damian Mould, Slice PR supremo.
"This is the best site dedicated to clubland and music I have seen. Don't underestimate Alex Gerry ... he's the all-seeing eye and he's honest enough to tell it like it is - no messing or arse-licking - and always with a good pinch of humour." David Cabaret, '80s/'90s club legend/designer.
"It is not often that the person behind the camera has as much style as the characters he photographs. I Love it!" Jodie Harsh, glamour puss, DJ & promoter of Circus & Foreign nightclubs.
"We just love the site and the pics look fab!" Ollie Frost & Marc Massive of Massive Ego & Act Art.
"I had a good look at the site ... It's a great effort. I was the first guy to put a weekly magazine online, so I can appreciate the work." Tony Claffey, publisher of QX International Magazine.
"If you have a keen interest in club scenes in general, it'll take you more than one viewing to look through this collection ... that include New York club kids, 80s', 90s' & 00s' London and celebrities." George Stark, AXM's entertainment editor.
"I checked the site and, apart from everything else, it shows that you've had some fun ... certainly more than most!" Harry Allen, New York City designer.
"The site looks really great. How would you like to be Boyz Magazine's 'Friend of the Week'?" Stephen Unwin, ex-editor of Boyz Magazine.
"I just had a good look at the site. I must say it's rather fabulous!" Scarlett, London's clubscene icon/legend.
"I really think the site is perfect. I have spent hours checking all the fab pics, especially all the Leigh Bowery looks I had never even seen before. I also love your text which features so much info, for instance the Tasty Tim profile is GREAT!!!" Danilo Monzillo, webmaster of the world-famous Blitz Kids site.
"Amazing site. Where do you find the time for all this? In years to come, your archive is going to be seen as a really important social document. You deserve your rep as a top snapper and journalist " Mike Von Joel, Editorial director of Photoicon Magazine.
"A fantastic website for those who want to see how we lived and how the other half is living." QX International Magazine review, issue 655, 19-09-2007.
